Introduction to today’s class
The main thing that we’ll be teaching you on Monday, everybody read this down Monday is mainly reading. Okay, so when I teach you guys reading, we’ll be focusing on different types of reading comprehension passages, in order to really help you guys understand how to read properly and how to analyze properly. So today, we’re going to spend most of our time on poetry. we’re going to be going through many different types of poetry today. And we’ll be analyzing different types of poems as we go through it. I think it’s really important that you guys all unite and you combine in terms of your efforts. what we’re going to do right now is we’re going to jump into the polyps
Wasp is trying to get through the windscreen.
So let’s have a look at this poll right here called well boss to do what’s to do with you battering at the wind screen. You can’t get through so as we’re looking at this poem I want you guys tell me what you think is going on here comment down below guys. What do you think is going on in that very beginning? Wallace what to do about you battering at the windscreen you can’t get through what is this about
Excellent work, guys. So is it indeed about a wasp that is trying to get through right. So this wasp is trying to get through and it’s unable to get through why? Because there was a windscreen comment down below if you guys see that. There was a windscreen and it’s trying to get through that windscreen and it’s unable to get through. Okay, now I want you guys write down who is the why do you think the wasp is trying to get through the windscreen? Can anybody tell me why the Wasp is trying to get through the windscreen because it thinks that the windscreen is air. Okay so the watch because it was a little bit dumb, they see the windscreen of this they say that the windscreen is clear and it thinks that the windscreen is Air. Everybody write that down so that’s the very first thing and what we’ll be doing as we read these things will be writing down some notes all the time. So whilst thanks windscreen is and is trying to go through okay everybody out there was thanks windscreen is and it’s trying to go through now it says the next bit you can’t get through.
So obviously the poet is looking at the was thinking oh, you can’t get through. Then it says well it’s all run wrong itself in treason turns a sudden solid and shuts you in a prison. Comment down below does anybody know what the word treason means? Again, comment down below does anybody know what the word treason means? What does the word treason treason just means that the world has betrayed the Wasp everybody write down the word betrayed. Okay, why has the world betrayed the wasp? Because the Wasp well does lying to him it says error itself and treason totally sudden solid and shuts you in prison. So it’s almost seemed like air now turned into solid in actual fact it didn’t turn into solid that was just gloss, right? So because the wasp is a bit dumb, right? The Wasp isn’t actually able to see that the gloss is the so it thinks that the gloss is why because the gloss is transparent. Likewise, the era’s transparent comment down below Have you ever ran into glass before? Okay I know a lot of kids have run it through other glass before ran into glass coming down below ran into glass If you’ve run into glass before so if you’ve run into glass before you guys know exactly what the feeling feels like you think that you know it’s gotten and you start running and then boom you hit the glass and you feel like you’ve been betrayed betrayed by what betrayed by the well betrayed by your eyes everybody write this down betrayed by us Your eyes have deceived you into running right into the gloss comment down below if you guys understand your eyes have deceived you into running right into the glass brilliant
What are the emotions you’re feeling?
Okay, and so the next bit it says and still through the wall Wasp the long grain paddocks sweetened with sugar flour and Daisy and gold belly button. So the wasp is looking through the wall through the glass wall and what he’s seeing are these long grain paddocks with trigger flower and Daisy and gold gold belly button all of these beautiful plants right that the Wasp itself wants to have right but then it says but up Wasp down Wasp climb was fall can’t beat your way through the clear strange wall it says right here so what a motion do we have here guys as the wasp is trying to beat its way through that clear strange wall? I want you guys comment down below what’s going on with that wasp? What is it trying to do? And why can it not beat its way through the wasps clear strange what what is going on? Comment down below guys. What is going on
frustrated Okay, everybody write this down. Obviously the wasp is frustrated. Brilliant work. Excellent. Walk us. So it says right here but up was down. Last climb was full cotton beat your way through the strange wall. It’s going up. It’s going down. It’s going fall. It’s climbing. It’s trying to go through that clear strange wall. And yet it cannot. Okay, so everybody write this down. So it’s trying desperately.
and yet a con. Right. So again, what kind of emotion do we have? We have an emotion of frustration. We have an emotion of desperation. Everybody write down the word desperation. So we know that the West was obviously trying very, very hard to get through. And yet for some reason, it’s unable to get through Comment down below for you guys to click.
brilliant and so we’re gonna go is we’re gonna go back up it says right here out and out then when the car stops worlds alright again and happy goes Wasp comment down below what happens in the end. Does anybody know what happens in the end to the wasp is was able to find its way coming down below guys what happens to the Wasp in the end.
we all know that when the car stops and the window opens finally the wasp is able to fly out and no longer is that prisoner no longer is it trapped inside. Okay, no longer is it trapped inside the prison of the car. Brilliant work. So, again, I want you guys to remember this in the 1% we are trying to train you guys to think beyond the three. Right all of you guys are in year three. We’re trying to train you guys to go beyond year three to think about a year five maybe even a year six level. How are we going to get into a year six level a year five year six level by building our vocabulary. So what I want you guys to do right now is answer a question which is what is the emotion of the wasp? Everybody read the step. What is the wasps emotion everybody write this down. What is the wasps emotion? Or what are the wasp’s emotions? How does it change? I’m gonna give you guys all about 30 seconds right now. To try to find as many words to describe the wasps emotion. Comment down below give us How does it feel when it’s trapped inside? What does it feel coming down below? How does it feel? What is the wasps emotion? It’s trying so desperately to get outside and yet calm. So what is its emotion?
Some people say happy. Okay. Not really feels happy at the end. But at the very middle in the very beginning. How does it feel? Sad try to find something a little bit better than happy or sad. Desperate frustration excellent frustration. That’s we’re talking about frustration. Brilliant work. Frustrated? annoyed, frustrated. Excellent. Okay, so that’s exactly right. So the the most that you feel is frustration and desperation. Now let’s say you want to try to find some other words. Instead of just frustration, desperation. What we can do is we go to a website called Word hippo. Everybody write down the word word hippo. So why the word hippo is your best friend from now on. Everybody write this down word hippo is my best friend. Okay. So whenever I asked you guys, what are the emotions? What’s going on here? You need to try to find some more complex words. And so what you want to do is you want to type in the word frustration here. And then you want to find some more complex words.
So here we have aggravation, right? That’s a very good one. Right? Another word is discouraged, disheartened, right. Think about if you’re being imprisoned, if you’re being trapped, obviously you’re feeling disheartened. Right, your feelings discouraged. What’s another word guys comment down below. It’s dismay, resentment. Right. All of these are very good words that you guys should be noting down to describe that WASP. So I’m going to give you guys a couple of seconds to write down some words from what Word Hippo and word hippo is the best friend everybody write this down. Word hippo is your best friend. If you say that what happened was not your best friend, you’re gonna get kicked out of this class. So everybody write down word hippo is indeed your best friend. I’m kidding. Right? But word hippo is going to be a very useful tool for you guys to use, especially when you get thrown you try to when you try to do some better writing, and you also try to do some more reading comprehension. Right? It’s very, very important that you use whatever
Okay, some people writing dismay, excellent. miffed. Excellent. agitated. Excellent. Brilliant work, guys. Okay. We’re going to jump into the other word that we have, which is a sense of imprison, mix. Everybody write down the word in prison. Okay, this is a very good word to note down. So when when you’re in prisons, that basically means that you’ve been your traps, right? You’re confined, you’re detained. You’re captured. You’re unable to go beyond comment down below if you guys understand. And so in this case what imprisonment is a very very important watch show as well, because we know that the that the person is in prison we know that the wasp is imprisoned. They’re unable to escape. Comment down below for you guys.
So what are some emotions to describe? We have the word, captivity everybody write down the word captivity. So when we have a animal at the zoo, an animal at the zoo is held captive. Everybody write down the word captivity. So they’re trapped. They’re unable to escape. Okay, another word that we’re going to go through is the word quarantine. Right? You guys should all know what the word quarantine means. Right? Now, the word quarantine, in this case supplies to COVID-19 Comment down below. If you’ve been quarantined at home. Everyone was quarantined at home for a specific amount of time. Right? So write down the word quarantine. That is a very important word as well. Right? Quarantine just means being trapped. Again, not being able to go up. Comment down below if you guys click.
OK, next one that we have is what? Detained everybody write down the word detained. So when you’re in prisons, again, you’re also being detained. Right? You’re being stuck, somebody’s being stuck at home. Or you could be stuck in a prison. So most of you guys know what these words are. What I would like you guys to do is start using a lot more of them in your writing, as well as later you’ll see in terms of comprehension as well
How much do you understand this poem?
Okay, we’re going to jump into the next one. The next one that we’re going to go through is going to be this one which is mourning. Okay, so let’s have a read of this. And again, what I want you guys to tell me is what do you think is the main idea here? What is this poem about? So morning is a new sheet of paper for you to write up whatever you want to say all day until night. Fold it up and it flies away. The bright words and dark words are gone until dawn and a new day to write o
What is this about what are the main emotions what’s going on here? So what is confusing someone doesn’t understand okay, well guys, what is this about?
Okay, so morning is a new sheet of paper for you to write on. So here it’s not actually saying that morning is a new sheet of paper morning is not a paper, right? But what it’s meeting here by saying morning is a new sheet of paper for you to write on. is saying that morning allows you to take a new breath and to start a fresh Day, everybody right That’s excellent work. It’s starting a new day, it’s a fresh start, right? And so in other words, it’s just like a U shaped pipe, it’s blank, you can write whatever you want on that new day, everybody write this down. So, so what we’re gonna do right now is I’m gonna make this a little bit smaller. And we’re gonna write some notes down on the bottom. Okay, so we can go through. So morning is a new day, a fresh start. Okay, and it’s almost like yesterday’s things are all forgotten. Whatever you want to say all day until night, fold it up and flies away. Comment down below, what do you think is going on here? When it says whatever you want.
When it says whatever you want, whatever you want to say, all day until nine, fold it up, and it flies away. Comment down below, guys, what’s going on here. So here, it’s just talking about this new sheet of paper. And it’s saying that the stuff from the previous day all flows away. Coming down below if you guys understand the stuff from the previous states is whatever you want until night, fold it up, and it flows away. So each day is fresh each day is new. Because whatever happened in that day, you can just fly it away, just throw it away, and it won’t come back the next day. So each morning is a new day, everybody writes down each morning is a new day. Each morning is a fresh start. So everything that happens on that day can be flown away or thrown away. Okay, either one is fine.
Comment down below if you guys clean. Excellent. Whatever you want all day until night, fold it up and flies away. So it’s saying that we should take the most of every single day. Okay, everybody write this down, we should always try our best to make the most of every single day to make sure that we do the most every single deck writes it says right here until nine fold it up and flies it away. Because we should make the most of every day because we don’t need to really worry about tomorrow. Okay, I’m only worried about the present or about today. Let’s make the most up to date. It says bright woods and dark woods are gone until dawn and a new day to write on scan. What’s that story about? Comment down below what are the last few lines about? So the last two lines when it talks about the Bright Woods in the dark woods are gone. So the good things and the bad things are all gone. Right? Good things and bad things all gone. Until Dawn. And a new day to write on. Say everybody write this down. So bright words, and dark words, good things. And bad things are all gone. Until Dawn to right on. So in other words, to keep going comment down below if you guys understand.
Every new day is a new page in the book
Okay. Excellent, excellent work. So hopefully most of you understand this. It’s good things and bad things all gone. It says until dawn and a new data right on. So every new day that we have is a new page in the book. Everybody read the stand new page in the book, right? We always have something new happening every single day. Now we’re going to do same thing in which I asked you guys tell me what are the emotions that we have here? In terms of mourning, right? What is it sort of talking about in terms of these people? So let’s type in the word fresh, right. So the first idea is we have the idea of freshness, right? The idea that something is new, right? We know that it is pristine, we know that it’s recent. We know that it’s clean. We know that it’s unblemished. We know that there is a new day, write comment down below. That’s the first idea that we have.
The second idea that we have is the idea that the idea that this is raw, that it is newfound, that is untarnished, straight. It’s not affected by the previous state everybody write down the word untarnished. It’s not affected by the previous state. Now again, when we’re analyzing poetry, we need to consider a couple of things, which is why do you think he’s trying to tell us this? What is the author trying to tell us? What does the poet trying to tell us? Why does he say a new page in the book in order to encourage us to seize the day to take up new opportunities. So everybody writes down is pretty much the same. You know, every single day well, you must Take the best opportunities, right? We shouldn’t just laze about, we should do our very, very best to take the greatest opportunities to make the most of these opportunities, right to make the most of the different prospects, the different choices, different possibilities.
All of these are words you guys interact them, okay? possibilities, alternatives, prospects, all of these different things, things which are involved in terms of taking on these new challenges. Comment down below if you guys are clear. Excellent.
What are the four amps?
So what I want to do right now is we’re gonna jump right into the full amps, okay. And this is going to be very, very important. I want everybody to write down four amps, okay. And we’re going to spend some time going through these four amps together in order to really understand how to analyze poetry. And then we’re going to continue going through some other poems write down the four amps. So everybody write this down. Number one is meaning. Okay, so when we go through poetry, the first thing that we need to really do to analyze, and to figure out the deeper meaning is to establish the definition of all watts. Okay? So you need to understand the definition of all the words that are being used.
So for example, here, you guys will understand most of the lugs and what they made, right? But not only that, you got to figure out what is the deeper meaning, right. So in here, when it when it says, morning is a new sheet of paper, it’s not saying that morning is a sheet of paper, but it’s just saying that morning is fresh, right morning is new morning is different. That’s the main thing that is trying to say, right, so meaning everybody write down the word meaning this is very, very important. Number two, we have something called main idea, everybody write down the word main idea. So in terms of main idea, we’re trying to figure out what is going on in terms of the pot, right? What’s the main idea here? What’s it talking about? And so here, it’s just saying fresh start. That’s the main idea of this poem. The idea of the first step, okay.
Then the next thing that we need to talk about is the emotion bit, right. So when we talk about emotions, we’re breaking down the emotions of this person. One by one morning is a new sheet of paper, you want to write on whatever you want to say or not until night, down to a night, fold it up flows away, we talked about the emotion, we’re talking about how this person is asking you to cease all opportunities, right to make the most of all the opportunities that you have. Not to kind of waste your time away. So don’t waste your time. Don’t worry about Don’t worry about the past. That’s kind of emotion Don’t worry about past or future, right? Just worry about what we have now
So be like a scientist, and what I mean by be like a scientist is when we’re reading through these poems, at the very crux of it, it’s really important that you go through and you try to figure out the hidden meanings. Okay, everybody write down the word hidden meanings. Crucially, crucially important that you go through, and you figure out what the hidden meanings are. Okay, so I want you guys all comment down below. And then what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna move on to the next poem.
