Numeracy:

• Number and algebra: Place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percent.
• Measurement and geometry: Length, mass, volume, capacity, time, angles, 2D and 3D shapes.
• Statistics and probability: Collecting and organizing data, creating and interpreting graphs and tables, probability.

Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation):

• Spelling: Correct spelling of high frequency words, spelling rules and patterns.
• Grammar: Parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.), sentence structure, verb tense.
• Punctuation: Use of full stops, capital letters, commas, quotation marks, exclamation marks, question marks

Year 5 NAPLAN Term 1

The focus for each class will alternate every week, following the format as displayed below:

Weeks 1,3,5,7

Writing: Students will learn the basics of persuasive writing, including how to identify an argument and how to craft a strong thesis statement. They will learn how to use evidence and logical reasoning to support their arguments and how to address counterarguments.

Students will delve into the world of narrative writing. They will learn how to create a plot and develop characters, as well as how to use setting, imagery, and other literary devices to enhance their stories. They will also learn about different narrative structures, such as the hero’s journey, and how to create a compelling climax and resolution.

Language Convention: Students will learn about grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and editing skills through in-class exercises and writing prompts. The class will focus on correcting common grammatical errors, using punctuation correctly, expanding vocabulary, and editing writing.

Weeks 2,4,6,8

English: Students will focus on reading comprehension, including the ability to understand and analyze texts of various genres and levels of complexity. They will learn how to identify main ideas, make inferences and draw conclusions.

Mathematics: Students will focus on number and algebra, including the ability to understand and use fractions, decimals and percentages, perform complex calculations, and solve problems involving multiple operations. They will learn how to identify and use mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and algebraic concepts.
