Right before the 2021 Selective Schools Examination the NSW Department of Education released sudden changes to the content and scoring of the Selective Schools test. The new test is now managed by Cambridge assessments who have completely redesigned the 2021 and ongoing years selective schools tests to comprise of subjects with a much higher priority on English, when compared to the previous format managed by ACER.
The changes to the selective school test syllabus include a complete replacement of General Ability with Thinking Skills, Cambridge formatted English questions and a revised mathematical reasoning.

The changes to the scoring system involve:
Greater emphasis on thinking skills, mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
An adjustment and balancing for the weighting given to mathematics, reading comprehension and thinking skills test components.
Selective schools are now calculated with a placement score out of 120, compared to the previous 300. This change indicates a much higher influence of students' selective school test results and a lower impact of moderated School Assessment Scores.
