It was a regular Wednesday, or so I thought, as I sat in the library flipping through my notes for the upcoming essay. The sunlight filtered quietly through the tall windows, highlighting the dust motes floating lazily in the air. I glanced over at Amber, my best friend since primary school, who seemed more distracted than usual. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her book, her eyes darting everywhere but at me.
We’d always been honest with each other—at least, I believed we had. That was what made what happened next so shocking. I reached into my backpack for a pen and accidentally pulled out a crumpled sheet of paper that wasn’t mine. It had my name on it, but the handwriting was unfamiliar. Slowly, I unfolded it. My heart hammered as I read the words: “Amber knows. She’s been lying to you.”
My eyes shot up to Amber. She looked away, and her cheeks flushed red. The realization dawned cold and heavy. I stuttered, “Amber, what is this?” She bit her lip, her hands trembling. The seconds stretched, unbearable. She took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Oli. I didn’t know how to tell you. I’m the anonymous editor of the school literary magazine. The one who rejected your story. I didn’t want to hurt you.”
A thousand moments replayed in my mind—the times Amber reassured me that my story would be chosen, the way she’d listened quietly when I doubted myself. Anger and embarrassment flooded through me, but above all, I felt betrayed.
For a moment, neither of us spoke. The trust I’d had felt irreparably cracked, but underneath the hurt was a strange sense of understanding. Amber hadn’t meant to be cruel; she just didn’t want to lose our friendship over something she thought was small. But to me, it changed everything.
I stood up, needing air, needing space. Her whispered apology echoed behind me as I walked out of the library. The world outside felt different—less safe, more complicated. And I wondered: could we ever go back to how things were, or was this the start of a new chapter neither of us had expected?

Ron Weasley was a strange person but he was his best friend. He laughed at certain words I talked about like he had friends who joked with him before. He made me shiver like he had an aura of power around him. He had orange hair and wrote about wizards all the time when we wrote narratives in class. In Dress-up day, he had a costume so realistic it made him actually look like a wizard.
When I told him he looked like a wizard, he looked at me frightened as if he actually was one. Wait, I’ve fallen for another one of his jokes, right? But what if he really was a wizard? A spark of curiosity filled through me, making me distracted for the lesson. In history, I heard a faint but shrill voice I heard quite often, but I was curious what it was this time.
A pile of feathers spilled from Ron’s bag, what were these for? I was curious, so curious I leaned sideways and fell into the ground. “Stop swinging your chair,” Miss Stalta strictly told me, a cross expression on her face. “As if I did,” I silently scoffed to myself. I had a glimpse of something brown fall from Ron’s bag just before the bell rang for lunch.
At lunch, I decided to investigate Ron’s bag, it was so tempting and mysterious I couldn’t resist. I followed Ron back to snag an opportunity to check his bag when he wasn’t looking. He looked around, so quick I almost couldn’t scramble away from his piercing look. I never saw that on him. He grabbed the thing I saw, it looked like – no it can’t be! It was a wand, the abracadabra kind of wand wizards use but this was a real wand. I stifled a gasp as I saw an owl dive to him! What was happening? The owl must have been the one who made the sounds, but why was it holding letters in its mouth. It looked straight at me, its terrifying eyes momentarily stunning me. Was my cover blown?
Ron grabbed his pencil out of his bag and grabbed the wand. He spoke something and it turned – not just turned magically transformed into a broomstick. Then he found me. “What are you doing here, this area is forbidden!” Ron exclaimed. I turned and spotted a sign that had the words ‘Forbidden, do not enter’ on it.
“Um, er, uh,” he stuttered nervously. ” You’re a wizard!”
“Yes, I am,” he replied so calmly It made me nervous. “I’m sorry for not telling you but I am,” “I’ll give you a cake as an apology,”
“I accept!” I exclaimed joyously. I went with him to learn about the magic world.

It was a perfectly ordinary day, with the normal school schedules and plain breaks. The same people got in trouble this morning, so I thought, what a BORING start to the day. When I came into the classroom, something felt different. Anna, a friend from preschool, started looking around anxiously, as if trying to not to have eye contact on me. It felt weird all right! “What is it Anna?” I asked her though she acted like she didn’t hear me at all. Then I thoroughly and carefully shouted once, “What is it Anna?” She then shot her hand up as fast as a bullet, and asked the teacher if she could be excused from class. I was confused and had so many questions without answers. Was she all right? and Is she ignoring me deliberately?
The next day, she passed along an envelope for me. It snaked all around the classroom, but everyone had a chance to read it (which Anna didn’t appreciate at all). She still acted a little bit shy around me. Finally, just before I got the note, my snobby partner shouted out, “Hey Mia! Did you know that Anna lied to you about the talent show?” I was sightly confused, but the message started kicking into my brain of what was going on. I quickly wrote on a piece of scrap paper, and thew it bang smack in the middle of Anna’s desk. She looked startled. It was about the day when she told me that I should enter the talent show because of my singing talent. At first, I didn’t know what she was talking about, but then she wandered around me giving compliments to my rough, out of tune singing skills. The next day, I carelessly told her I had the confidence to sing an awful song wearing garbage bags in front of the whole school only if she entered with me. She promised me that she would do it. The next week, Anna questioned the teacher if she could use the bathroom. I was a left in the line of the talent show shocked that she just left me standing there all alone with our silly costumes. The next thing I knew was that I was in front of the whole entire school, wearing a garbage bag, and singing horrible out of tune as promised, but only alone! I was laughed at for an another month that felt like it was a year. But that was then and this was now. Thus, now I couldn’t choose if we could still be friends or if the tables had flipped…

DING DING DING! The loud warning bell rang. Terrified civilians ran to shelter, screaming and panicking. My trusted friend, Yarrow and I ran with the hurried pack and we were pushed and shoved around. We all had the same goal: to get back to our amazing, extensive underground town network called Grounopolis. Yarrow and I got back into our own dome-shaped cave, which was like a small house. We got into our comfortable beds and slept within seconds, without any distractions.
That is, until I woke up in the middle of the silent night. I heard distant footsteps outside of our cave. I looked over to Yarrow’s bed. He was not there. I carefully followed the footsteps out of Grounopolis and out into the forbidden Dragon’s Forest. I shivered. Is Yarrow going to go there? All the brave people who went there came back terrified, saying it must be forbidden to go there. I crawled after Yarrow’s faint shadow and I heard a few roars and dragon noises. Was he being eaten? No, it sounded like a dragon conversation. I slowly peeped around the thick tree trunk I was hiding behind. There I saw Yarrow, talking(?) to an ice dragon. This is impossible, how can he speak with the cruel dragons? Our general knowledge was they were just mindless killing machines. I saw the ice dragon, coming over, and it grabbed me. I could see a blurs of brown, green, white and blue, but then-
It was pitch black.
