Don’t give up if you’re allergic to your cat. You are not alone, but fortunately, there are more
efficient techniques for coping with allergies. Believe it or not, at least one in every three cat
owners is allergic to their feline companions. (1)__________________ Others may develop
asthma or other severe respiratory issues.
According to David Rosenstreich, MD, Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Albert
Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, the main cause of
human allergic responses to cats is cat skin. “What is allergic in cats is a protein or material that
originates from their sebaceous and certain glands,” Dr Rosenstreich says.
(2)________________________
The allergic response is caused by two proteins in this “cat dust” and cat albumin. “The
chemicals in these particles are extremely allergic,” says Dr Rosenstreich, “and since they fall
off the cat so readily and may be transported by air currents, cats prefer to leave the material all
over the place. As a result, cat owners’ homes get covered with these allergens, and individuals
develop severe allergies to cats.”
(3)___________________________ Pollen grains, on the other hand, are approximately five
times larger.
It’s also worth noting that allergic responses to cats don’t usually happen immediately away.
Even if you’ve had your cat for years without experiencing any symptoms, you might develop an
allergy at any time. (4)_____________________ They can develop when cat owners bring in
extra cats, thus “overloading” their systems with cat allergies. In other situations, replacing a
sluggish elderly cat with a kitten might provoke an allergic reaction since the young cat is much
more active and will transmit more allergens than an older cat.
There are three options for dealing with an allergic reaction: environmental management,
medication therapy, and allergy injections.
(5)___________________ It basically implies cleaning your house and limiting your cat’s
access to certain regions. “It is vital that the cat never enter the bedroom.” There should be one
place in the house where the patient may go where he or she will not be exposed to allergens.
(6)______________________
Wash and clean everything in the room where cat dander may have accumulated, such as
curtains, linens, and pillowcases, once your cat has been removed from the bedroom. If you
have a rug, Dr Rosenstreich recommends getting rid of it since it is likely to be contaminated
with allergies. If you can’t get rid of the rug, get it steam-cleaned. (7)__________________
