However, in its current form, this system is causing significant and unintended harm to students and teachers, and I respectfully urge the Board to review and revise its implementation.

    The primary issue is that the automated system frequently records inaccurate attendance and behavior data, which is then treated as definitive without sufficient human review. For example, students who arrive on time but enter through alternative approved entrances have been marked absent because the system failed to register their presence. In several documented cases, these absences automatically triggered disciplinary notices and warnings to families, despite teachers confirming the students were present in class. Correcting these errors requires multiple emails, written explanations, and administrative intervention, placing an unnecessary burden on both staff and families.

    Teachers have also been adversely affected. The system has flagged normal classroom movement or group work as “unstructured behavior,” generating automated reports that reflect negatively on classroom management. Educators have expressed concern that these reports, which do not capture context or professional judgment, are being stored in personnel records. This has led to anxiety among staff and a growing reluctance to use effective, student-centered teaching strategies that the system may misinterpret.

    I understand that the Board adopted this system to streamline operations and ensure consistent standards across the district. Those goals are reasonable and commendable. Nonetheless, technology that lacks flexibility and meaningful human oversight risks undermining trust, morale, and fairness within the school community. When automated decisions directly affect attendance records, discipline, or professional evaluations, accuracy and context are essential.

    I respectfully propose that the Board consider temporarily limiting the system’s authority so that automated records are treated as preliminary rather than final. Specifically, I urge you to require mandatory human review before attendance penalties or disciplinary actions are issued, and to provide a clear, efficient process for students and teachers to challenge and correct errors. Additionally, gathering structured feedback from educators and families and adjusting the system’s settings accordingly would help align it with the realities of daily school life.

    Thank you for your time and for your continued commitment to the well-being and success of students and staff. I hope you will give this matter careful consideration and take prompt action to ensure that technology serves our schools, rather than hinders them.
