Your child can tell amazing stories out loud. They have imagination in spades. But when it comes to writing those stories down, the sentences come out short and the ideas get lost. The gap isn’t creativity, it’s that nobody has shown them how to turn what’s in their head into words on the page. We teach that step by step, with playful tools made for Year 2 minds.

The blank page is intimidating, even for adults. For a Year 2 student, it can feel overwhelming. Our program turns that fear into excitement by breaking writing into small, achievable steps, celebrating every win, and making every lesson feel like a creative adventure rather than a test.

The foundations built in Year 2 compound. Children who feel confident as writers in Year 2 walk into Year 3 ready to tackle the structured, assessed writing tasks that begin then. Strong start, strong finish, that’s the Year 2 advantage.
How does L. Frank Baum open a scene and pull the reader in? Students study selected passages from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, looking at how setting, action, and detail combine, then construct scenes of their own using the same techniques.
Tension is built, not announced. Students examine how L. Frank Baum controls pacing, raises stakes, and delays resolution in key passages, then apply the same tension-building moves to their own narratives.
Dorothy and her companions each want something: a brain, a heart, courage, home. Students study how Baum shows character through wanting, and give their own characters a clear, concrete motivation that drives the story forward.
Whose eyes are we looking through, and what difference does it make? Students study how L. Frank Baum uses perspective to control what the reader knows and feels, then experiment with perspective choices in their own writing.
The narrative half culminates here: students pull together scene craft, tension, character, and perspective, and sit a full timed narrative piece under exam conditions, marked with detailed feedback.
The persuasive half begins. What makes an argument actually persuasive? Students learn to form clear, defensible positions and support them with reasons that follow, the foundation of scholarship and Selective persuasive writing.
Strong arguments collapse without structure. Students master introductions that state a position, body paragraphs that each carry one reason, and conclusions that land, the architecture examiners reward.
Assertions persuade nobody. Students learn to support claims with examples, scenarios, and reasoning that hold up under scrutiny, and to weave evidence into paragraphs rather than bolting it on.
The same argument can whisper or command. Students study rhetorical techniques, emotive language used with control, rhetorical questions, direct address, and develop a persuasive voice that sounds confident rather than shrill.
The persuasive half culminates in a full timed persuasive piece under exam conditions, exactly the skill scholarship and Selective exams test, marked with detailed feedback and a term wrap-up.
Weekly Live Zoom Class

Weekly Homework + Model Responses
One writing task per week with full model responses provided. Students see what excellent Year 2 writing looks like, then measure their own work against it.
