The curriculum for this HAST Trial Test Only Course is designed to equip students with the key skills, concepts, and strategies required to succeed in the Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) for Year 7 to Year 8 entry. The curriculum targets the specific question styles students will encounter in the HAST, with an emphasis on building familiarity, confidence, and critical thinking. The tests and supporting resources provided may include several or all of the areas outlined below:
Reading Comprehension
- Targeted practice with HAST-style reading comprehension passages and question types, including main idea, detail, inference, and vocabulary-in-context questions,
- Exposure to a range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and literary extracts,
- Development of strategies to locate key information, interpret meaning, and draw logical conclusions,
Mathematical Reasoning
- Practice with a wide variety of HAST-style mathematical reasoning problems, covering numerical operations, patterns, relationships, and applied problem-solving,
- Focus on developing efficient strategies for interpreting questions, identifying relationships between variables, and applying logical steps to reach a solution,
- Reinforcement of core numeracy and mathematical reasoning skills relevant to HAST,
Abstract Thinking (Non-Verbal Reasoning)
