Your child can tell amazing stories out loud. They have imagination in spades. But when it comes to writing those stories down, the sentences come out short and the ideas get lost. The gap isn’t creativity, it’s that nobody has shown them how to turn what’s in their head into words on the page. We teach that step by step, with playful tools made for Year 1 minds.

The blank page is intimidating, even for adults. For a Year 1 student, it can feel overwhelming. Our program turns that fear into excitement by breaking writing into small, achievable steps, celebrating every win, and making every lesson feel like a creative adventure rather than a test.

Love of writing isn’t taught through worksheets. It’s built through creative play, encouraging feedback, and a supportive community of young writers. Our program is designed to make your child want to write, not just write because they have to.

The foundations built in Year 1 compound. Children who feel confident as writers in Year 1 walk into Year 2 ready for the longer, more independent writing that begins then. Strong start, strong finish, that’s the Year 1 advantage.
Writers collect words the way other people collect shells. Students start their own word collection: sound words, colour words, animal words, silly words. We play word-building games and discover that new words can be made, borrowed, and invented.
Every sentence is a little machine: it starts with a capital letter, says one clear thing, and ends with a full stop. Students build sentences from word cards, fix broken sentences, and write their own super sentences about things they love.
Spelling isn’t memorising, it’s pattern-spotting. Students explore common sound patterns, stretch words out loud to hear their sounds, and play games with the tricky words that don’t follow the rules. Every child leaves with their own spelling toolkit.
Ideas are everywhere, you just need to know how to catch them. Students learn playful idea-generating tricks: “what if” questions, picture prompts, and mixing two ordinary things into one extraordinary idea (a flying breakfast! a shy dinosaur!).
Every story has a shape: a beginning that introduces someone, a middle where something happens, and an end that wraps it up. Students map familiar stories onto the shape, then plan and begin their very first structured narrative.
Stories need someone to follow and somewhere to be. Students invent characters (with names, feelings, and one special thing about them) and build story places using their five senses. Their Week 5 stories grow richer with real characters and settings.
Describing words turn plain sentences into pictures. Students hunt for adjectives, play describing games with mystery objects, and practise upgrading simple sentences (“the dog ran”) into vivid ones (“the fluffy brown dog zoomed across the wet grass”).
Persuasive writing starts with having an opinion and a reason. Students practise the magic frame, “I think… because…”, debating delightfully important questions: Is summer better than winter? Are dogs better than cats? Everyone’s opinion counts, and every opinion needs a reason.
Students level up from one opinion sentence to a mini persuasive piece: an opinion, two reasons, and a big finish. We practise convincing each other of important things (why we need a class pet, why bedtime should be later) and discover how good reasons make writing powerful.
Writers finish things. Students choose their favourite piece from the term (story or persuasive), polish it with their new skills (super sentences, describing words, careful spelling), and publish it with a title and illustration. We celebrate every single writer.
