Writing Wizards Senior

The term where a full novel study becomes exam-standard writing.

Built around real novels from the literary canon, this stage focuses on skills that carry directly into high school and senior exams: constructing a specific, evidence-backed argument, reading a text through more than one critical lens, and explaining the deliberate choices behind original creative work.

Turning readers into writers

Year 6, Junior High School (Year 7–8), and Senior High School (Year 9–10) each complete a full novel study, not excerpts, then turn that study into essay and creative writing. The standard rises each year, from foundational essay structure up to HSC-level comparative analysis.

Tutors are 99.95 ATAR achievers, ex-scholars, or state ranks.

Curriculum Overview
What your child learns this term

Every year level studies a real, well-loved book this term, chosen for its themes and craft. Select a year to see what they'll read and how the term is structured.

Wednesday • Writing
"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (Jules Verne) & "A Little Princess" (Frances Hodgson Burnett)
  • "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" Students study how Verne builds a believable underwater world and gets readers to see Captain Nemo as neither simple hero nor villain, using perspective and symbolism rather than telling the reader what to think
  • "A Little Princess" Students study how Sara Crewe's inner strength is shown even as her circumstances fall apart, and how objects like the attic and her doll carry meaning about class, kindness, and resilience
  • A Genuine Novel Study Unlike the Junior stage, this is a full read and study of the whole book, not excerpts, building toward the kind of essay writing high school will expect
  • Their Capstone Essay Students build a specific, evidence-backed argument about how their book uses a symbol or character to make its point, the most demanding piece of writing they'll produce all year
How This Term Is Structured

A full novel study. Weeks 1–4 read the book in full. Weeks 5–10 turn that into writing: an essay, a creative piece with commentary, a discursive essay, and a final timed portfolio week.

Tuesday • Writing
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Arguing From Evidence, Not Assumptions Using Sherlock Holmes's method as a model: a claim is only as strong as the specific evidence behind it, and jumping to conclusions too early is treated as a real weakness, in the story and in student writing
  • Building Tension Without Saying "It Was Scary" Studying how Doyle uses the moor and its atmosphere to create suspense without ever directly stating that something dangerous is happening
  • Following Several Threads at Once Students write paragraphs that hold more than one piece of evidence in view at the same time, building on the simpler paragraph structure from earlier years
  • Their Own Mystery Students write an original short mystery, planting and later resolving their own withheld information, alongside a piece of analytical writing on how Doyle builds suspense
How This Term Is Structured

A full novel study. Weeks 1–4 read the book in full. Weeks 5–10 turn that into writing: an essay, a creative piece with commentary, a discursive essay, and a final timed portfolio week.

Tuesday • Writing
"A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens
  • Reading a Novel as a Deliberately Built Object Looking past the historical setting to examine how Dickens deliberately builds pairs and mirrors throughout, two cities, two men who resemble each other, to make a point rather than just tell a story
  • Reading the Same Text Through Different Lenses Students learn to look at the novel through more than one critical angle, for example a historical lens or a psychological one, and hold more than one interpretation in mind at once
  • Writing at Exam Standard Comparative essay writing that weaves this novel together with texts studied earlier in the year, building the exact skill senior exams and the HSC will ask for
  • A Piece That Explains Its Own Choices Students write a creative piece that responds directly to the novel's ideas, paired with a written explanation of exactly why they made the choices they did
How This Term Is Structured

A full novel study. Weeks 1–4 read the book in full. Weeks 5–10 turn that into senior-standard writing: an essay, a creative piece with commentary, a discursive essay, and a final timed portfolio week.
