Year 7 English teachers assume students arrive knowing how to write a multi-paragraph response with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Most Year 6 students have never been taught this structure. We teach it explicitly: thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting evidence, and conclusions that don't just repeat the introduction.

There's a critical difference between retelling what happened and explaining why it matters. High school English demands analysis: how does the author use language to create meaning? What techniques are employed and what effect do they have? We teach your child to move from summary to analysis, the single most important writing skill for high school success.

A or B in Year 6 English doesn't mean high school readiness. Primary school assesses different skills at a different depth. High school demands sustained arguments, critical engagement with texts, and analytical vocabulary that most primary students have never encountered. We bridge that gap, so your child walks into Year 7 with confidence, not anxiety.
😤 "They're smart but they just can't get their ideas on paper"
This is the most common thing we hear from parents of Year 6 students. Your child is articulate, thoughtful, and engaged in conversation, but their written work doesn't reflect their intelligence. The issue isn't ability. It's that they've never been given a systematic framework for turning thoughts into structured, compelling written expression. We give them that framework.
Reading and study of the novel's opening movement: how Verne establishes his narrator, builds anticipation, and launches the voyage. Three to four techniques taught, with reading set for the week.
How does Verne make the implausible feel scientifically coherent? Students study the craft of speculative world-building aboard the Nautilus: precision, detail, and the ordered wonder of Nemo's world.
Neither simply hero nor villain: students examine how Verne positions the reader in relation to Nemo through narrative perspective, character alignment, and the symbolic opposition between the Nautilus and the violence Nemo is capable of.
The final movement of the novel: what does the story ultimately argue about knowledge, isolation, and moral compromise? Students complete the reading and consolidate the analytical groundwork for the writing weeks ahead.
Two weeks constructing the year's academic capstone: a structured, thesis-driven, multi-paragraph essay with a specific, arguable claim, embedded textual evidence, and sustained explanation, the most independently produced piece of literary argument of the year.
Students compose an original creative piece in deliberate dialogue with the novel's concerns, accompanied by a craft statement articulating the choices behind it, writing at an advanced Year 6 standard.
The discursive form: exploring a question from multiple angles with balance, sophistication, and an authentic voice, one of the exact forms senior school assessment and eventually the HSC build on.
Critical and reflective writing on the term's texts and the student's own work: evaluating interpretations, defending judgements, and reflecting on craft decisions with precision.
A final week of timed assessment-condition composition, plus the curation of a term portfolio: each student's definitive record of their growth, presented at an advanced Year 6 standard.
