  1. Rick was the son of a biologist so by the age of 10 he was expected to help with planting some trees. Rick was placing a delicate, young sapling into the soil. The stem was about as thick as a twig and the leaves just sprouted. Ricks hands were shaking.

“What if I snap this sapling in halves?” thought Rick.

He did not dare even to bend the sapling a little bit. He quickly grabbed a spade and dug a hole. Carefully he put the tree inside the hole without breaking any roots. The sapling was slowly straightened by Rick’s hand, and he tied it to a wooden pole. He felt a pang of eagerness to help in the project to bring the Golden Tamarins back.

The sun descended to the trees, turning the sky blue with large dots of pink in the air. Rick was there on the computer screen searching for information on the project his mother was on the lead of.

“Two Million Trees!” exclaimed Rick, “How am I going to plant to million trees if one tree took me a lifetime!”

Rick sat there wondering about how he was going to plant all the trees. He finally decided that he would have a try even though the tree he planted in the garden took so long to plant. After that he started searching for more information about the project. He realised that they were making a national human-made park for the Tamarins. The next day he went to the area which was covered with dirt and bare without grass. He went to grab more saplings and remembered how the first tree he planted.

Rick had already planted 50 trees in one week. He was now not a timid, nervous boy that started planting trees a week ago. He was growing stronger like the tiny tree that was becoming an adult tree. He was planting more trees and by the time he started looking at the screen that shows how many trees you have planted he was second with 10,000 just behind his mother with 10,100. He was right behind his mother in the project area so his mother could help Rick with some of the problems he had.

“I see a Golden Tamarin! Over there!” yelled one of the workers named Rebbeca. Rick saw a flash of gold right next to him. The project was working the Tamarins were coming! The trees were increasing every day from 500,000 then 1,000,000 to 2,000,000! They had done it! They had made a park for the tamarins but not only that the Robins, Kangaroos, Emus, Wombats, and other animals were all coming to the park. Rick’s mum’s projects had worked! And the Golden Tamarins were saved. Rick thought about the first tree he planted and gave a smile. It reminded him to always have hope.

  2. Rick was a mere 11 year old boy when he first arrived at the local park with his mother, a former biologist, to help plant some trees. Wildlife animals and plants had decreased in the past few years, and they had came to help. As he was handed a small, delicate seed, he wondered how this little thing could grow into a tree and help save tree kangaroos and harpy eagles. Gingerly, he lowered it into the hole in the soil, covering it up. He decided to come back and check on it soon.

As Rick arrived at the local park again, his seed had grown into a young sapling. He marvelled at how fast it had grown and went on to water it. As he looked on his mother’s computer at the project she was leading, he was surprised. It read ‘Let’s work hard and plant two million trees’. Rick was determined to achieve that goal, and, looking at his little sapling made him want to do it more. So, while everyone was working on it, he buried more seeds, and looked after all of them. He realised he wanted to do more, so everyday, after school, he gave out posters and flyers, encouraging people to plant trees.

Slowly, the local park was filled with many different kinds of trees, from evergreens to to oaks. The community alongside Rick and his mother, had planted a million trees already, whether in their backyard, or just in the park. His knowledge and strength was building up, before long, he was almost an expert on trees. Looking at the chart of ‘How many trees we have planted’, Rick noticed, they were close to the goal. His mother was beside him, looking at him proudly ass she noticed the growth in him.

As the last sapling sprouted, a worker gasped and pointed to something hiding in the treetops. “LOOK! A HARPY EAGLE! Wow!” shouted another. Everyone else watched in awe as it flew overhead, landing in one of the oaks, which was once also a tiny little sapling. Rick felt a wave of triumph wash over him, and he too, watched as it soared from one tree to another.

  3. Rick’s Mum was a famous biologist, so she expected him to learn how to take care of plants and animals. Lately, she has been planning for Rick to join her team’s “Plant 2 million trees and save the Golden Tamarins” project. On his first day, his Mum taught him how to plant and take care of a young sapling so it can grow into a mighty tree. The next day, she left him alone to try and plant them. Rick trembled as he delicately held the sapling in his hand.

“What…What if I accidentally break this sapling’s stem?” He murmured. He carefully put the sapling aside and dug a small hole in front of him. Then, he cautiously put the sapling into the hole and covered the stem with soil. After that, he watered it with the amount his mother had told him to. He went back to his Mum’s office and looked at the poster again.

“What!? 2 million trees! That’s impossible!” He told himself. He had already spent a quarter of an hour to plant one sapling! He decided to go and ask his Mum for advice.

“Just be careful, stay calm, and you will gradually speed up as you gain more experience!” She answered. Rick understood and ran over to get more saplings, he was going to change the animal’s lives. In the following month, Rick planted saplings almost every day and watched as more and more animals came to live. He felt something warm in his chest as he looked at the computer as it showed the exact number of trees in the forest. Currently, it showed 593,862 trees have been planted. Rick has planted 25734 trees, just behind his mother, who has planted 27513 trees. He was now right behind his mother, not only as a son, but a partner in the project.

“There’s a Golden Tamarin family up in the trees!” A voice yelled. Rick looked up. Something gold and shiny caught his eye, it was a Golden Tamarin family! Soon, after 5 more weeks of hard work, the number of trees in the forest finally reached 2,000,000! The forest now not only attracted Golden Tamarins, but it also attracted other wonderful creatures such as kangaroos, echidnas, dingoes, emus, wombats, eagles, and many more! His Mum’s team’s project has succeeded, and the Golden Tamarins were safe. Rick recalled the moment when he first began planting, he had grown, as if he was also once a sapling but now a mighty tree.

  4. Seeds of change: Brazil’s rainforest revival by Ian Xu
Rick’s sun-bronzed hand trembled with excitement as he carefully placed the delicate seedling into the fresh, earthy soil. Around him, the newly planted section of the Amazon rain forest stretched across like an intricate patchwork quilt, each sapling a precious stitch in nature’s fascinating tapestry. The hesitant Rick who had first come to visit the reforestation project had changed-and now understood the vital role of each plant and animal in the rainforest’s spectacular web of life. His mother made something fascinating here in the rainforest-a second chance to restore the golden lion tamarin’s home. The rain forest was home to many endangered species who have died out, and they were going to sustain the wildlife corridor with their might.
Rick was overwhelmed by her mother expectations. Two-million trees? It would take him a life time to even plant one tree without his mother’s guidance, so how was he going to plant that much tree? The weathered shovel felt foreign in Rick’s trembling hands, as he faced the vast expanse of barren earth. He couldn’t do it. Why couldn’t he just plant one single tiny sapling? He thought to himself. He breathed deeply, and started to dig out the brown dirt, which was flinging onto the ground. Each carefully scoop of rich soil felt like a triumphant victory against his gnawing self doubt. Each precisely tamped root system a battle won against the voice in Rick’s mind that said one boy couldn’t do it. He carefully dropped the tiny but precious seedling into the newly dug hole and slowly tipped it in. Time flew as Rick worked through each sapling with clumsiness and messily. The sun finally ran to sleep while the moon climbed up the sky to replace it. Rick’s heart ached and his stomach pulsed like he was going to vomit. His fingertips tingled as h dropped the shovel and sat down, with his sweaty palms touching the soil. Rick heard the birds chirping beside him as a gust of wind blew against him.
“Ok team, we’ve done enough today. We can all go home and rest.” Said Rick’s mum in an exhausting tone.
Rick felt the weight lift of his shoulders as he lurched home. Maybe he could do better and make his mum proud. Maybe he could contribute to the team and make progress in the reforestation program. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all.
Rick woke up just when the sun come into sky. He took out his gloves, grabbed his shovel and strolled out the door. not single person was on the site. Rick took a deep breath and started to fling more and more dirt with his sharp shovel. One by one, Rick worked until his hands dropped of his arms. Rick sat down and admired the beautiful nature, until a shadow loomed across him, and a sound of a truck revving attracted Rick’s attention.
A tall wide and and monster-like truck with a sharp metal claw with a large hanging spiked ball provoked Rick. the truck leaned back, and swung its deadly ball at Rick. Rick crashed down to crouch as it barely missed him. instead, they were going for the poor, small trees! “noooooo!” shrieked Rick. Swish! Crack! The trees snapped in half like sticks and collapsed onto to the ground. The truck picked up the sticks with its claw and dashed away, and Rick could hear another car revving behind him. the truck revved up, and skidded across the beautiful landscape as it soon caught up with the the truck. the trucked leaned closer to the car as the car swerved and left the truck heading for a cliff as it skidded down and crashed.
“phew! That’s got rid of him!” a familiar voice gasped with tiredness.
“mum!” cried Rick. “all the trees have been destroyed! it’ll take years to regrow them all!” exclaimed Rick while running to his mum.
” don’t worry my dear rick. with your help, we can do anything.” said hi mum with a sooting tone. a jolt of warmth shot through him and he knew he had done it.

  5. As the sunset faded, Rick and his cousin Peter finished the gloves. Its job is to translate a plant from one place to another effectively and efficiently so they named in the translating gloves. For a whole six months, they have been testing and experimenting, trying to achieve making these gloves.

At first in the park, they didn’t want to touch any of the tools because they thought everything was fragile. They just watched their mums plant trees in the forest. It was their job, ensuring that there is an safe ecosystem for endangered species to live in. As they came more frequently, they tried planting some saplings. Most of the time they failed but it didn’t stop them. For weeks they have been planting the delicate saplings in the soil.

They gradually started to get better and at the end of the month, they succeeded on their first plant. Just then Peter’s mum walked by. “Good job you two! Keep it up!” She exclaimed as she started to plant another oak tree sapling. The boys hi fived and smiled at each other.

For the whole afternoon, they planted lots of trees until they saw a poster near a stump. The colourful sheet of paper attracted their eyes, allowing them read through the text with excitement. It was a contest for the best way to move plants from the soil. They ran to their mothers who were drinking tea. “Mum! There is a competition for most efficient and effective plant remover,” they said enthusiastically. Rick and Peter’s mum nodded and told them that they should give it ago. Rick and Peter agreed and at once, they started to work. For quite a while, they tried many different ideas but none of them worked. One day they were walking around the street, trying to come up with another idea.

A gloves shop was nearby that inspired Rick to make translating gloves. With only a month left they asked for advice from familiar experts and worked really hard every day. They took all their free time just to do this project.

On the 5th last day, they presented their final product to their mums. They put a glove each and went to their backyard. At a steady pace, they each pulled out a weed perfectly with all of its roots in one piece. The women showed thumbs up, making the boys happy.

On the day of the competition, they went early to practice their pulling skills. Peter’s mum set a timer and they started pulling small weeds. They used weeds so they don’t harm the environment. The contest gives them a minute to pull up as many weeds as they can. The timer stops ticking at 60 seconds and they count how many they pulled out. 25 perfect weeds! The team are positive that they will win.

The boys stand in their places wait for the microphone to speak while their mums wave and cheer in the crowd. “Attention everyone, welcome to the pick the weed contest where contestants use their chosen object to pull weeds. The best quality and efficiency will win a golden trophy! Let’s me introduce our participants, on the left we have Peter and Rick,” the microphone announced. The pair wave and smile as best as they could. “On the right we have Chad and Sam.” The crowds cheers for both teams as loud as a lion roaring to protect his young.

“We will begin the minute in 3 seconds, 3…2…1…start!” The contestants run to the weeds and start pulling from opposite sides. Chad and Sam pull as fast as they can with their object and it is quick but it not that neat! Rick’s team pulls at a steady pace to conserve energy. They pull out perfect roots unlike Chad and Sam. The crowd chant for the team they go for, clapping the syllables with their hands. In the last 10 seconds, the Rick and Peter start to speed up. They go as fast as they can while the other team is too tired and they stop pulling. Sweat cover the right team and they sit down tiredly.

“5,4,3,2,1!” The boys stop and the participants count the weeds and record how many are perfect on a big piece of cardboard. The crowd cheers when both teams show their pieces of cardboard. The right team got 69 weeds but only 13 are perfect and the left team got 87 weeds and all of them are perfect! Peter and Rick fist bump to celebrate their victory. The boys walk to the trophy and hold it up together. They give everyone one last wave and head to Rick’s home. At home they have a party celebrating the victory of the boys.

Rick and Peter hand in their invention to a gardening company and they decided they will sell their products. The pair tell the company how they did it and soon after, these gloves were viral. The boys have came so far. From observers to experts, they learned many things about nature and also made something very useful to lots of people. Peter and Rick also learned that it is the growth that counts not the winning.

  6. As Rick added the finishing touches to the translation glove for the competition in the city, he looked up to see his mother digging small holes and planting the trees in the rainforest. After all the years of hard work, Rick finally started to make some progress.
In the beginning, Rick didn’t know what tools were used for what purpose, and he was not interested in helping his mother to plant trees. Now, he was fully grown, aware of the dangerous spots to plant trees and willing to achieve the “2 million trees” goal. He also understood the purpose of planting the trees; to save the endangered Golden Tamarins.
Rick remembered when he first saw the poster on a tree trunk. It was a competition to invent a type of gloves that could enable humans to communicate with plants!
“Mum, could we please enter the competition? It will earn us 1 billion dollars, enough to buy all the manure and seeds!” Rick had asked his mother, along with his cousin, Roll.
His mother had agreed to let them enter.
The next day, Rick and his cousin took their glove to the theatre in the city for the competition. They arrived nice and early, just to test one last time before competing. Rick put on the glove and held the button on it as he rested his hand next to the plant. Then, heart pounding, ears blocked, the glove shined a bright light, as if exploding.
“I am suffering so much without water! Someone help me!” The plant begged as Rick watched in surprise (the last time he tried it, there were still some kinks, but this time it fully worked).
“Yes! It worked!” Rick exclaimed as he did a little celebratory dance.
After a few more minutes of waiting, the show was on. For some reason, everyone else who were competing failed!
Rick had won 1 billion dollars!
Rick learnt that it isn’t about money, it was about caring and putting effort into what you want to achieve.
