Year 5 Thinking Skills Zoom Holiday Booster

Five days on the section taught at no school.

Thinking Skills is a full section of the Selective test and it is taught at no school. Most children meet their first syllogism on test day. Five days on the logic the section is built from, so the question types are familiar before Term 4 starts.

Why Thinking Skills needs its own week

For the Thinking Skills section of the 2027 Selective test. Here is what the section actually asks, and why a five day block moves it.

It is not a school subject

Syllogisms, assumptions, flaws in arguments. No classroom teaches these, so the first time most students see them is in the exam.

It cannot be crammed

Thinking Skills is a way of reading an argument. It takes repeated exposure over weeks, which is exactly what a five day block gives.

Guessing looks like knowing

Strengthen and weaken questions have two plausible answers. Students who guess get half right and never find out why.

A quarter of the total

Thinking Skills carries the same weight as Reading, Maths and Writing.

Who this is for

A good fit
  • Has never done Thinking Skills, or has only done it as puzzles
  • Guesses on strengthen and weaken questions
  • Gets deductions right slowly and runs out of time
  • Needs the reasoning behind each question type, not just practice
Not the right fit
  • A child preparing for HAST abstract reasoning (a different question type)
  • A family looking for general critical thinking games

In sessionFull timed set, marked and explained

How each 2 hour session runs

01Learn it

A clear method for the day's question type, taught live.

02Try it, get feedback

Timed practice, then what to change and why.

03Apply it again

The correction goes straight into the next set.

First hour

The method for the day's question type, taught live with worked examples. Students try guided questions with the tutor watching how they work, not just whether they got it.

Second hour

A timed set under 2027 conditions, then every wrong answer worked through live. Students leave knowing what to change, and it is tested again the next day.

Cameras on, small group, no recordings. The work happens in the room.

What your child walks away with

  • A method for each Thinking Skills question family
  • Confidence with syllogisms, assumptions and flaws
  • A faster way to work through puzzle questions
  • A clear picture of which question families still need work
