Year 5 English Fundamentals Zoom Holiday Booster

Five days on the Reading section, in the 2027 format, live.

The Selective Reading section changed. Cloze passages, comparative texts, extract matching and poetry now carry the paper, and none of it is taught at school. This booster gives your child five days on exactly those question types, live on Zoom, in a class of 5 to 10 students.

Why English Fundamentals needs its own week

For the Reading section of the 2027 Selective test. Here is what the section actually asks, and why a five day block moves it.

The format changed and old papers train the wrong test

The 2027 Reading paper is built around cloze passages, comparative reading and extract matching. Past papers from the old format practise questions that are no longer there.

Reading a lot is not the same as reading like an examiner

Children who read every night still lose marks on inference, vocabulary in context and main idea, because the test asks for evidence, not enjoyment.

Poetry appears every year

Australian poetry, tone and mood show up in every sitting and most students have never been taught how to read a poem for a multiple choice question.

One section out of four

Reading is a quarter of the total. A weak Reading score drags the whole application down, however strong Maths and Thinking Skills are.

Who this is for

A good fit
  • Reads well at home but loses marks on inference and vocabulary in context
  • Has only practised old-format comprehension papers
  • Freezes on poetry questions
  • Needs to see the 2027 cloze and comparative formats before Term 4
Not the right fit
  • A child who has not yet started Year 5 work in reading
  • A family looking for a general English or writing course (see the Writing intensive)

How each 2 hour session runs

01Learn it

A clear method for the day's question type, taught live.

02Try it, get feedback

Timed practice, then what to change and why.

03Apply it again

The correction goes straight into the next set.

First hour

The method for the day's question type, taught live with worked examples. Students try guided questions with the tutor watching how they work, not just whether they got it.

Second hour

A timed set under 2027 conditions, then every wrong answer worked through live. Students leave knowing what to change, and it is tested again the next day.

Cameras on, small group, no recordings. The work happens in the room.

What your child walks away with

  • A method for every 2027 Reading question type
  • A way to attack cloze and comparative questions instead of guessing
  • Faster, more accurate inference under time pressure
  • A clear picture of which Reading question types still need work
