Year 5 Mathematical Reasoning Zoom Holiday Booster

Five days on reasoning, not method.

School maths rewards method. The Selective test rewards reasoning under time pressure, on questions your child has not seen before. Five days on the problem types that separate strong school maths students from strong test scores.

Why Mathematical Reasoning needs its own week

For the Mathematical Reasoning section of the 2027 Selective test. Here is what the section actually asks, and why a five day block moves it.

The test asks questions school never does

Mathematical Reasoning is non-routine by design. The content is Year 5 and 6 level, the questions are not, and a child who has only ever practised textbook exercises stalls on the first unfamiliar one.

Speed is a skill

Roughly a minute a question. Students who know the maths but work slowly leave the last third of the section blank.

Worded problems are where marks go

Multi-step word problems, ratios and rates, working backwards. Fast at mental maths does not mean fast at turning words into working.

One weak section sinks the application

Maths is a quarter of the total and it is the section parents assume is fine. Often it is not.

Who this is for

A good fit
  • Strong at school maths but drops marks on worded and multi-step problems
  • Knows the content but runs out of time
  • Has never practised non-routine problems
  • Needs speed and accuracy, not more content
Not the right fit
  • A child who still needs Year 5 content taught for the first time
  • A family looking for school homework help

Day by day

An indicative outline. Tutors adjust the balance to the group in the room.

Day 1

Multi-step word problems

Turning words into working, working backwards, checking the answer against the question.

In sessionTimed problem set, reviewed live
Day 2

Ratios, rates, fractions and decimals

The number topics that carry the most test marks, in the way the test asks them.

In sessionTimed number set, reviewed live
Day 3

Patterns, sequences and number logic

Finding the rule, extending it, and the traps that catch fast students.

In sessionTimed pattern set, reviewed live
Day 4

Non-routine problems and speed

Unfamiliar problems, choosing a strategy quickly, when to skip and come back.

In sessionSpeed drills against the clock
Day 5

Full reasoning set and review

A full Mathematical Reasoning set under 2027 conditions, then every wrong answer worked through live, with a plan for Term 4.

In sessionFull timed set, marked and explained

How each 2 hour session runs

01Learn it

A clear method for the day's question type, taught live.

02Try it, get feedback

Timed practice, then what to change and why.

03Apply it again

The correction goes straight into the next set.

First hour

The method for the day's question type, taught live with worked examples. Students try guided questions with the tutor watching how they work, not just whether they got it.

Second hour

A timed set under 2027 conditions, then every wrong answer worked through live. Students leave knowing what to change, and it is tested again the next day.

Cameras on, small group, no recordings. The work happens in the room.

What your child walks away with

  • A strategy for each Mathematical Reasoning question type
  • Faster working with fewer careless errors
  • A plan for pacing the section on test day
  • A clear picture of which problem types still need work

Important to note

Places in our holiday Zoom small-group classes are strictly limited.

Once a student is enrolled and payment is received, the place is reserved and no longer available to other families. To ensure fair access and stable class planning, please confirm your child's availability before enrolling.

No refunds will be issued for change of mind, scheduling conflicts, or failure to attend. Enrolments cannot be transferred or deferred.

Refunds will be provided where required under the Australian Consumer Law, for example, if the course is cancelled by the centre.

Questions parents ask

Can my child do the same subject in Week 1 and Week 2?+

Please don't. Both weeks cover the same content, so the second week would be a repeat. Choose a different subject for the second week instead, and the 2 or 3 programme discount applies at cart.

Are sessions recorded?+

No. Zoom Holiday programmes are live only and there are no recordings. Please confirm your child can attend every session before enrolling.

How does the multi-programme discount work?+

Add any 2 or any 3 Zoom Holiday programmes to your cart and the discount applies automatically at checkout. No code needed.

What does my child need?+

A device with Zoom and a working camera and microphone, a quiet space, and pen and paper. All materials are provided in class.

Who teaches the class?+

Senior Scholarly tutors who teach the Year 5 Selective programme during term. The same people, the same methods, in a five day block.

Is this the right level for my child?+

These programmes are built for Year 5 students preparing for the 2027 Selective test. If you are unsure, message us on WhatsApp before enrolling and we will advise.
