“Mum, look at these moisture readings.” Rick exclaimed confidently, shooting a glance at the analysis screen. It reminded him of the day he had come here, clueless about all the mysterious numbers and letters around him. They had all looked like boring old squiggles. He hadn’t even tried to understand, and was too intimidated to even touch the machines and equipment in the facility. Now, his brain revolved around this circulation, as he moved undoubted from one machine to another, checking the numbers and changing aspects.
The older food scientists gazed happily as he explained the market analysis and product consistency to a new intern. Last summer, he had been too shy to even speak in team meetings, always shrinking back in his chair when he was questioned. However, several months of watching, learning, and asking questions had transformed him into a confident junior team member.
His mother lifted her head to see Rick explain the concepts and statistics of brand loyalty. When she had first brought him here, she had worried that he would hate all the details and facts, and be bored by technical details. Although she had doubts, Rick had turned out to be increasingly interested in the amazing science behind his favourite food.
“Social media stats suggest that product development will rapidly increase in the next year or so.” Rick announced at a team meeting. He no longer muttered quietly, but instead, he spoke in an assured voice, his voice ringing in every corner of the room. The marketing director nodded approvingly, smiling as an old memory of Rick flashed in her mind.
As the final test batch emerged from the kitchen, Rick stood tall beside his mother. Six months of learning at the lab had transformed him from a chicken sandwich lover to one who understood the journey from concept to creation. He had grown to love his role as the kitchen’s youngest expert, always prepared and ready to help their new creation make its way to the competitive world of fast food.
Noticing his mother’s proud expression written on her face, Rick realised he had gained something more then the life cycle of chicken sandwiches, he had learnt to never give up, believe in yourself, and inside him, a new appreciation for all the things the workers and his mother did every day blossomed. He wasn’t just his son; he was a colleague of hers that helped and understood the hard work she undertook every day.

As Rick carried the chicken sandwich towards the customer at table number 3, it produced a appetising scent with every step Rick took. Hands trembling, he set it down on the table and watched from the counter as the customer took his very first bite. The customer revealed a face of astonishment, while Rick crossed all his fingers, hoping for the best. Then, the customer took another bite after another, his eyes gleaming with glee as Rick breathed out an inaudible sigh of relief. He turned away just as a flashback began.
Rick remembered the first day of work in the restaurant. He had to make a simple loaf of soft bread following the recipe every novice started with, but he had decided to not follow the procedures, boasting that his mother was the best chef of all time and he had her genes. Rick, obviously, made a loaf of bread that the chefs in the restaurant named bRick-dry, matching its texture which was as dry as a brick! He was scolded continuously by his mother that evening but still decided to follow his own way. So the very next day, Rick had dumped a whole entire box of chicken schnitzel into the bin because he had air-fried all of it at once instead of one-by-one.
“Rick, the recipe given to you is the one you must follow,” Rick’s mother informed him after work,” so please don’t try to do it your own way, please.”
Rick was finally convinced to follow the procedures, so the next day he went Chef Andrew for the recipe again and asked, ”Chef, please tell me the way to bake bread and fry the chicken schnitzel, I am very sorry for ignoring you every time you try to help me.”
He thought that the chef might’ve disagreed, so promised to never do what was not right again. The chef had then replied, “My boy, I have always looked forward to this day, and it came! I will teach you everything I know about cooking, so that the secret can be passed on for many generations.”
So from that day on, Rick had never done what was wrong.
While he finished that flashback, Rick looked up to see Chef Andrew. He approached and embraced him in a very big hug.
“Thank you for teaching me a life lesson Chef Andrew!” Rick chirruped, as his eyes welled up in tears.
As he let go of him he saw his mother’s face smiling warmly.
“Rick, you have grown and matured, I am very proud of you!” She beamed.
Rick suddenly realised that he was not just his old, plain, chicken sandwich-loving self, he was a humble, resilient and thankful boy who had developed gradually by observing and copying other people’s right-thinking aspects. He had grown out of the shell that had enclosed him for very long, and had evolved into a blooming tree, young and healthy.
Rich loves his new food, so he decided to open a restaurant that served hot chicken sandwiches.
Today is the first day that he opened the restaurant’s door. The first customer walked inside the restaurant, and ordered her food. Rich made the food as fast as he could. He walked slowly and quivered his hand and hoped the customer would love his food. So he sended the food to the customer with a quivering hand shaking up and down. He watched her eat the very first bite, he hoped she would give positive feedback.
“Does it taste like w…e…l…l…?” Rich asked with a hand quivered. The costumer use a dangerous eye to look at him and answered
“It tastes very well, it’s the best sandwich that I ever eat.”answered the customer. Rich finally can have a deep sign. After a moment, the customer went away, after that no one came to Rich’s restaurant anymore.
The next morning , so many customers were waiting outside. He suddenly felt very weird. “Why are there so many customers going to my restaurant today?” he thought. One night Rich got very tired to make about 999 hot chicken sandwiches and some customer said it’s too slow to give my hot chicken sandwich quickly or I’ll never come, then a lot went away. Rich felt very angry and a bit sad.
“Why?” he said to himself,”Why can’t I do that?” So he decided to close his restaurant tomorrow. But when he locked the door, he saw a man with a cup in his hand and yelled
” I’m hungry who could help me, then he fell down on the ground. Rich saw it and decided to give him a hot chicken sandwich, and then feed him.
“Thank you for saving me, I will repay you when I get rich, what’s your name?”asked the man.
“My name is Rich, nice to meet you!”answered Rich. Then he decided to open the door again to help the poor people.

In the test kitchen, sophisticated machines measure crunch factor, moisture retention, and flavor compounds. The nervous, uncertain bot who had first stepped into this lab six months ago was gone now Rick understood exactly what this data meant. His mother’s team had finally created something special- a chicken sandwich that could compete with the industry leader that had taken social media by storm.
“look at those recipes! They’re all so complicated and long!” Rick shouted confidently while staring at the screen on his iPad. This social media reminded Rick, of him on the first day of school at an English class. He didn’t know or understand anything with all the words and letters around him. Now, he is getting older, he can understand them. Maybe, I could enter the competition using Mum’s chicken sandwich recipe.
“Mum, can I try the best chef in town competition?” Rick asked. “Ok, but you need to learn how to cook first.” His mum answered while handing the recipe over to Pick. That night while Rick’s mum was showering, Rick grabbed a bowl and dumped the cooked chicken, with a lot of salt and pepper inside to make roast chickens. The next day, Rick unpacked the loaf of bread and placed them on the plate, then put the roast chicken on top of it. “Rick, what are you doing?” Mum asked him grumpily. “I was trying…to make a chicken sandwich for you. Do you…wanna try it?” Rick answered nervously.
His mum walked forward, slowly then took the sandwich from Rick’s hands, and had a tiny bite of it. “Sweetie, you added too much salt! Since you have the recipe, you must follow it!” Mum told him in a stern voice. Rick tried over and over and over again with her mother, then one day, it finally worked. They let the best taste tester in town, Tom try it and they watch him take a bite of it silently. Tom didn’t say anything, he just took another bite and another. “This is the best chicken sandwich I have eaten in my life!” He yelled. “I believe you will be ready for the competition,” Tom added again.
Tom gasped and asked her mum if he could enter it now. “Of course.” His mum replied proudly. Soon, the chicken sandwich was famous in the town and was on social media. That day, Rick had learned his lesson, he had to work hard and listen, the most important part is that, never give up!

Rick’s hands were shaking furiously as he reached to take out the first chicken sandwich he ever made. His mum was the CEO of the Chicky Chicky resteraunt and he was expected to help out in the company because he was 11 years old.
” Rick, it’s ok, it’s not like you put a explosive inside the loaf of bread,” his sister, Emily teased.
His sister was 14 years old and very annoying. She has dark, brown hair and normally teases Rick. Rick was slowly walking to the table to give the food to the judges to test the brown, crispy and overcooked chicken sandwich. The judges quickly used a knife and a fork to cut a minute bit of the sandwich. Rick’s heart almost ripped out of his chest when the judge slowly closed his eyes and sat there.
” Very crunchy but slightly overcooked,” commented the judge.
As soon as the test was over, he raced back home accidentally bumping into a few people. After the next few weeks, he was constantly practicing his chicken sandwich. Then when he was walking home the next day, he saw an enormous sign.
” Enter you chicken sandwich into this fabulous competision?” thought Rick, “I better enter.”
When he went home, he told his mum that he wanted to enter in the compitition. His mum brought him all the materials he needed to complete the task. When the day finally came he jumped out of bed and ran to the competition.
After he arrived, he realised that he was going to present his sandwich to the strictest judge in the whole world that rejected many of the best chefs in the world! He started to measue the ingredients precisely and check the temperature was right.
” Times up!” yelled the judge,” hand over the dishes!”
The judge took a microscopic bit of each sandwich. He chewed each one and thought. When he came to Rick’s sandwich, after the first bite, he immediatly shoved the whole sandwich in his mouth. Which means it was obvious that he had won. He got a prise of a five hundred dollars which he used to buy new equipment for the company and a golden trophy. When Rick became a adult, he became the CEO of his mother’s resteraunt.

Rick’s eyes widened as he gazed around, clutching his mum’s hand tightly. Rick had only just turned 4 recently, and his mum brought him to the food laboratory for a treat. Rick was disappointed at the food laboratory. He thought it would be a food laboratory piled with all countless foods to try. He imagined himself sitting down relaxing on the couch. With a stomach bulging like a balloon. Instead, the laboratory looked nothing like his imagination.
There’s nothing to do in this stupid, stupid laboratory, Rick thought to himself. He thought it was a miserable place to be. But his thoughts changed ate the age of seven. Rick ran down to the laboratory and sat down.
“Initial social media sentiment analysis indicates positive engagement trending at 92% with strong demographic penetration,” Rick reported with professional authority,“ For our chicken burger has succeeded!” Cheered Rick, as all the food scientists jump up and celebrated. Their lab had changed from a lab to a competitive fast-food company.
Those shy days in the lab were long gone from rick.
Rick’s mother had always thought that the things in the lab were to complicated for Rick mind to even process, but now, Rick’s mind was submerged into their fast-food company, and he was like the CEO in their company. He had contribute to the company countless of times(even though had to because he was part of the company)and made the success in their company, and now, Rick had finally created something special-a chicken burger that could complete with the industry leader that had taken social media by storm, leaving his mother‘s company in second place. Rick always thought they could beat the company, but whenever he thought of the legendary Jamie Oliver and that team, he was hopeless.
Six months later, Rick gained confidence. They were only missing 15 followers until they overtake social media and beat the first company. They designed better signs, better sauces, and they even designed special a mouthwatering burger, the grand triple chicken whopper! Days and days passed it to the team and thought and thought of ideas. In first place with followers-but Rick’s team weren’t. Rick also ran out of ideas(Rick was their only source of ideas) and they lost hope. No one spoke in the lab after that day. The food scientist became more and more miserable every day, until one day, Rick spoke.
“ I have an idea, why don’t we make… a pickle sandwich?” Said Rick softly.
Then a sudden cheer erupted in the crowd of food scientists.
“ You did it Rick, dear boy!” Cheered his mother as she grinned at him.
Without delay, they quickly started to work and work on the pickle sandwich. into the sun ran off and the Moon came to replace it. Rick was so tired he dozed off to sleep on the table in the lab.
Rick woke up tired as he opened up his eyes and wobbled to his phone. Check the news. The headlines were: “ fast food company has taken first place!” He opened it up. Tense was building in his mind. Then, he couldn’t believe his eyes. They had taken first place! Rick saw his mum as as she crumbled on top of him, hugging him, and Rick knew he had done it.

His mother’s team had finally created something special – a chicken sandwich that could compete with the industry leader that had taken social media by storm.
“The analysis shows that 0-0.36 crunchiness will be most suitable for customers from Europe since they do not favour crunchy meat.” Rick announced to his mother’s team with an unknown certainty that even he did not expect. The senior manager nodded as he explained the statistics behind the crunch factors. He recalled when he first stepped into the lab, when he had first seen these complicated machines, dazzled by the numbers and statistics constantly changing. 6 months ago, when he had arrived at the laboratory building, a mix of butter, grilled chicken and lettuce smells ran into his nose as he heard voices arguing.
“Check the chicken now!”
“Okay! Stop being so bossy!”
“I’m not bossy!”
“Fellows! The analysis has shown 64% of water in the chicken meat drains out from it and only leaves 36%!” Soon, the door creaked open as a familiar figure stepped out.
“Hi Rick! It’s a pleasure you’re came to visit! Come in!”
“Hi Mum!” Rick replied, jumping with excitement.
“let’s go in!” She exclaimed as they trudged into the lab.
“Here, try our newest sandwich!” She cried, shoving an enormous sandwich into his hands. The smooth, soft bread on his skin felt soothing in the cold lab. He tried to eat the sandwich but couldn’t bite, the sandwich was too big! He managed to finish it in 2 hours by cutting it into 4 pieces. It was too big, but the crisp chicken and butter warmed him up from the cold temperature.
“Rick! What are you doing? You’re supposed to be monitoring the bread heater!” Rick jumped as he pulled himself back to the present.
“Coming!” He yelled as he weaved through the machines and gadgets in the lab, finding his way to the bread heater. At the bread heater, Rick stared at the numbers, constantly changing. 6 months ago, he didn’t understand anything on these machines, but now he had changed. The nervous boy who came here 6 months ago is gone and Rick is now an unofficial junior scientist in his mother’s team. He wasn’t just his mother’s son anymore, he was her partner in their lab that stands by her side through everything.

At first when Rick entered the kitchen his mind was puzzled and he did not know anything in the kitchen. When he asked his mum what all these huge machines were, he became more confused since his mum was using all of these bizarre terminologies that he didn’t know and he regreted asking what everything was. But when he looked at the huge machines closely and when they were working he gained curiosity.
At first he found out the names of the machines. secondly he found out how they work. Then he learnt how to use them since he wanted to use them. Meanwhile his kitchen team was in a contest to make the best chicken sandwich. They were trying to make it the most crunchiest, The boldest, the one with the most taste in it and the one with no bones. now since rick knew how to do everything so he sat and made the best sandwich in the world that even his team couldn’t make. He made it the crunchiest by hacking into the crunch meter and making it go very high. He made it the most tastiest by adding all the spices and also frying it in spices. He made the sandwich with no bones by making a new machine and eliminating all the bones. Next he duplicated all of the sandwiches and he and the whole team ate one each. It was so mouthwatering that everyone wanted more. It was like a zombie apocalypse trying to take his sandwich instead of his brain.
They entered the sandwich in and won. They were called up to the stage where the competition was happening. As the judges tasted it you could smell blown minds and chicken as their mouth watered. Rick was the youngest person to win the chicken sandwich competition and also the youngest person to make a machine.
It was the best day of him and his teams lives. They also sold the sandwiches and were the richest since they had 1 google and later people ended up having no money so they started giving free sandwiches.

Only 6 months ago, Rick didn’t know anything about the objects around him. He was at his mum’s chicken sandwich shop for his birthday. Rick observed how they use the objects but he was uninterested in making these disgusting foods. He hated chicken sandwiches. He thinks it so revolting that he throws the fresh dish into the garden. Now he thinks it is not so bad if you don’t eat it. When he came more frequently, complex machines intrigued Rick. Gradually, he started asking how things work and helped the group. His mind was full of ideas about how it could taste better.
One morning, when Rick’s mother went to work by bike, she saw a giant sign on the notice board. It was about a chicken sandwich competition, where people compete on having the best efficiency, healthiness and taste.
The excited mother raced off to work ending up as a sweaty droplet. She told everyone in the group about this significant event. The reward was a holiday to Singapore! When Rick came to his mother’s office after school, his mother told him about the positive news. He was intrigued to making the best burgers in the world!
After being told about the contest, he really wanted to win. Rick tried really hard every day after school to get the perfect taste. Fortunately, he got a great taste just days before the contest. The team asked a professional chef to test their product.
As Rick prepared for the final product to test by the famous chef, his mind drifted in the future and dreamed about them in hammocks on the beach drinking coconut water. How fantastic that would be! As the chef knocked on the door, the interrupted dream floated away, back to the present. The chef walked in, excited to test the fantastic sandwich. “WOW! …. This is so good! You definitely win the contest!”he muffled as he swallowed the gigantic piece of sandwich. Smiling faces formed on the people.
On the morning of the contest, Rick and his mother went to the stage early place the ingredients they prepared yesterday for the competition. Rick was filled with emotions of excitement and nervousness even though great feedback was given. “What if the opponents products are better than ours?”wondered the worried Rick. Suddenly, the lights brightened and the speaker started talking.“Attention contestants, take your places in the chicken sandwich competition!”the microphone announced.
Rick and his mother were doing this together because they group think they are the most skilled people. They walked to their table and with healthy ingredients, a beautiful taste and quickness of their hands, they were sure that they would win the contest.
The stage was outside in the dark night sky. The wind blew slowly, creating a small breeze. Rick was shivering a bit so he put on a jacket while he looked in the sky, staring at the stars. Whoosh! A shooting star appeared in the corner of Rick’s eye. “I hope we win the contest,”wished Rick. The star gave a twinkle that made him smile.
As Rick gazed at the people in the crowd, the microphone started to talk. “Hello everyone, welcome to the chicken sandwich contest. May I announce the participants. On the right, we have Lucy and Tom, on the left we have Charlie and Amelia and in the middle we have Rick and his mum. At the front of the stage, we have the three judges.” The judges waved at the audience and smiled as best as they could. Everyone in the audience cheered as loud as they could, waving their coloured lights each representing different people on stage. “Let’s get this competition started!”the microphone said.
On the big screen there was a countdown 3…2…1…go! The contestants work as fast as they can and people start chanting in the crowd. Rick cuts the lettuce neatly while his mother cooks the meat carefully. At 10 mins they are almost done. The other contestants have just started but are their chicken sandwiches tastier than Rick and his mother? Rick hands the fresh chicken sandwich to each of the judges and let them taste it. After one big bite, they hold up the signs and they show full marks for all of the categories except for one judge. The taste sign was 9 but it was still a pretty good mark! Rick returned to his seat, watching the other people cooking. After a while, both teams finished and handed their products to the judges. Lucy and Tom got all nines, good but not great enough to beat Rick and his mother! The left team got disqualified because they cheated by ordering one from a shop so that means they won! The board showed their names and the colour they are. The fans cheer for Rick and his mother creating smiles on their faces. One of the judges gave the ticket to Rick. He thanked him and headed home with excitement.
They went to the holiday and had lots of fun time playing and eating delicious food. The whole team had a party before the holiday. From an observer to a professional chef! His mother had never thought he would be interested in her job. He learned about the machines and what is positive and negative. He had came so far! It is not about the winning, it the progression that counts.
