  2. INFORMAL EMAIL TO FELLOW STUDENTS
Subject: Help Us Build a Playground We Deserve! 🛝💪

    To: Elmwood Students
    From: Ayaan
    Date: 18 / 2 / 25

    Hey everyone!

I hope you’re all doing okay and surviving this mountain of homework. I wanted to quickly talk to you about something that affects all of us every single day—our school playground.

Let’s be honest… it’s not great. The grass is more like crunchy brown straw, the benches are splintering, and that one rusty basketball hoop looks like it’s clinging to life. Some parts are straight-up dangerous. I actually saw someone trip over the broken pavement near the water fountain last week. It’s sad, honestly, that the space where we’re meant to relax, play, and recharge looks more like a scene from a zombie movie.

    We deserve better.

Our school is filled with creative, energetic, and hardworking students. We spend hours in class and deserve a fun, safe, and inspiring place to chill and move around. Imagine having colourful new equipment, shaded areas, soft grass, and maybe even a mini outdoor gym or climbing wall. A space that actually makes you want to go outside!

I’m starting a campaign to ask for real improvements to the playground—but I can’t do it alone. I need your help to show that we all care.

    Here’s how you can support:

Sign the petition (it’ll be at the front of the library every lunchtime this week)
Join our student meeting on Thursday at lunch in Room 12
Share your ideas for what you want to see in the new playground
Send me a quick email if you want to help with posters, videos, or presentations!
This isn’t just about swings or soccer goals. It’s about showing we have a voice and we care about our wellbeing. A better playground means more fun, more laughter, and fewer rolled ankles!

Let’s turn our worn-out patch of concrete into something awesome. Something bright, safe, and full of life. Something we can actually be proud of.

Thanks so much—and seriously, let’s make this happen together.

    Talk soon,
    Ayaan

    FORMAL EMAIL TO PRINCIPAL
Subject: Request for Playground Renovations to Support Student Wellbeing and Safety

    To: Principal Sherbet
    From: Ayaan Talwar
    Date: 18.2.25

    Dear Principal Sherbet,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to respectfully request your support for the renovation and improvement of our school playground. As a student at Elmwood Secondary, I, along with many of my peers, believe our outdoor space no longer meets the physical, emotional, or safety needs of our school community.

Our current playground is in an increasingly poor condition. The grass is dry, patchy, and often sharp underfoot. The basketball court surface is cracked, the benches are worn and splintered, and the play equipment, where it still exists, is rusted or unstable. In some places, the uneven concrete presents real safety hazards. These conditions are not only uninspiring—they are unsafe.

Beyond the physical issues, the emotional impact on students is just as serious. The playground should be a space where we can relax, recharge, and enjoy fresh air. Instead, it feels neglected and lifeless. As a result, many students stay inside during breaks, missing out on valuable movement and connection with nature. For students dealing with stress, anxiety, or social challenges, a safe and welcoming outdoor space can be a vital escape—a small piece of calm in a busy school day.

Research shows that quality outdoor environments improve concentration, reduce stress, and even boost academic performance. Our current space simply does not allow these benefits to flourish. If we invest in renovating our playground—adding shaded areas, colourful and safe play structures, updated sports equipment, and soft landscaping—we can create a space that encourages movement, imagination, and community.

This is not just a matter of aesthetics. It is a matter of equity, safety, and wellbeing. Many schools across our district offer dynamic, modern outdoor spaces that reflect their commitment to student health. We, too, deserve a playground that reflects the energy and potential of our students.

I have begun gathering student support through a petition, which has already gained significant momentum. Additionally, a student group will be meeting this week to brainstorm ideas and present them to you in a respectful and well-researched proposal.

We hope you will consider our voices. We understand funding is limited, and improvements take time, but even small steps would make a meaningful difference. Whether it’s resurfacing key areas, adding greenery, or replacing unsafe equipment—we would be incredibly grateful for your support and leadership in making our school grounds safer, brighter, and more enjoyable.

Thank you for your time and care. We look forward to working together on this important initiative.

    Warm regards,
    Ayaan Talwar
